Eyes tired from too much screen time? Key Nutrients in This Supplement Will Protect Your Eye Health

How much time do you expect to spend in front of a screen today? If you’re anywhere near the UK average, it’s probably over six hours.

Phones, tablets, laptops, TVs – screens have become essential in our daily lives for work and play, and it’s hard to look away.

A recent investigation of British adults found that half of those surveyed spent 11 hours or more a day looking at screens, and a quarter 14 hours or more.

We used to be warned that we’d get ‘square eyes’ if we watched TV for too long – and it’s really damaging to eye health, leading to digital eye strain, headaches and dry eyes and tired.

For this year National Eye Health Week (September 19-25), we are more likely than ever to focus on how we can take better care of our vision.

Regular eye tests, frequent screen breaks, and reducing screen glare can all help, but our long-term eye health really depends a lot on what we eat.

Research has shown that healthy eyes contain high levels of nutrients called lutein and zeaxanthin, types of carotenoids that can filter out up to 90% of harmful high-energy blue light. Blue light is emitted in significant quantities by the screens of our phones, tablets and other digital devices.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are also very powerful antioxidants, protecting our eyes from problems related to oxidative stress such as fatigue, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and digital eye strain, among others.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the macula, a tiny part of the eye in the center of the retina used to distinguish colors, fine details and central vision – all vital for activities like reading, writing and the driving.

Together with the meso-zeaxanthin isomer, they form the macular pigment, which plays a key role in visual performance.

Although we can get lutein and zeaxanthin from our diets, usually from eggs, dark leafy green vegetables like kale, and brightly colored fruits and vegetables like carrots and corn, lots of ‘among us just aren’t getting enough of these essential nutrients.

“Lutein and zeaxanthin both have strong antioxidant capacity, which means they can react quickly in the body before they have a chance to build up in the retina and be useful for eye health” says Dr Miriam Ferrer, PhD, of FutureYou Cambridge, one of the UK’s leading developers of science-backed nutritional supplements.

To overcome this challenge, FutureYou Cambridge has developed Vision+an innovative formulation combining lutein and zeaxanthin with lycopene, zinc and vitamin E.

“Vision+ uses a unique delivery system in which highly reactive lycopene extract from tomatoes acts as a kind of “decoy”, harmlessly oxidizing in the body, so that more lutein and zeaxanthin can be delivered intact to the eyes”, explains Dr Ferrer.

‘Vision+ also contains zinc, which contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. Zinc and vitamin E help protect eye cells from oxidative stress, which can adversely affect eye health.

Christine says she noticed an improvement in her eyesight within “days” of taking Vision+

Christine Hill, 68, from Cambridgeshire decided to give it a try Vision+ after experiencing vision problems, including eye discomfort. “Within days, I noticed the difference,” she says. “I could not believe it.”

“Where we live, we look quite far across the fields, and suddenly I noticed that everything became clearer. My eyes didn’t feel so gritty.

“My eyesight was clearer, my eyes were more comfortable and it gave me a lot more confidence while driving. I tell everyone about it. I can’t praise it enough.

Ted, 40, from Saint Neots had a similar experience, partly caused by his job as a software developer.

“I work all day on a screen. And when it’s your job, you have to do it, even if you feel tired,” he says.

“I also like to read a lot in the evening, on screen or on paper. But my eyes felt tired after about an hour which was really frustrating.

‘When I heard about Vision+ I thought, okay, this is an interview for your eyes – how about I try it?

“After about a month or two, I found that I could continue reading for two or three hours in one evening without feeling tired or getting itchy eyes.

“Reading is important to me, and I feel like it really works better with Vision+.’

“Lutein and zeaxanthin are two amazing ingredients that support the eyes’ natural defenses,” says optometrist Dhruvin Patel.

Optometrist Dhruvin Patel, founder of Ocushieldhas spent years studying the effects of screen time on our health, developing medically approved screen protectors and glasses that filter out harmful blue light.

“Since the pandemic, I think people are really feeling ‘zoom fatigue’ and are now much more aware of screen time and its impacts,” he says. “Long screen time has been shown to affect our sleep because artificial blue light suppresses a hormone called melatonin that tells the body when it’s time to rest.”

“Lutein and zeaxanthin are two amazing ingredients that boost the eyes’ natural defenses against UV and blue light. There’s nothing better for protecting the retina and macula, and supplementing them can help people take care of their eye health.

Attention to detail has always been important to 83-year-old architect Archie Russell, who works hard as Grants Secretary for the Beds & Herts Historic Churches Trustraising funds for the repair of parish churches.

Archie was worried when his optician warned him during a checkup that he had detected a degree of age-related macular degeneration.

“It wasn’t too advanced, but he gave me a shopping list of good fruits and vegetables to eat to help me out,” Archie recalled.

Archie’s wife, Madeline, was taking Turmeric+ from FutureYou Cambridge, and it did “no good”. So he decided to try Vision+.

When he next visited the optician for a check-up about a year later, he was amazed.

“The degradation had not increased at all. So taking Vision+ made a very significant and positive difference.

“I wasn’t actively targeting foods that might have made a difference. The difference was made by taking Vision+. He did an absolutely magnificent job.

‘I am delighted to recommend it. It worked for me and I’m sure it will help others.

We all care deeply about our precious sight, but few of us know how to best care for it, with 60% of us in the UK unaware of the key link between eye health and nutrition, according to Vision matters.

“A healthy diet, quitting smoking, moderate physical activity and regular visits to the optician are all good for eye health,” advises Dr. Ferrer. “Unfortunately, today’s hectic lifestyles mean that many people lack essential nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin in their daily diets, and an effective, high-quality nutritional supplement like Vision+ helps keep you replenished.

“As part of National Eye Health Week, we’re giving people the chance to try a free pack of Vision+ for just the cost of postage. We hope that many more people will share a positive experience like that of Christine, Ted and Archie.
